Chronicling the adventures of a group of friends from 1983 to 1990, this series is a tragicomic exploration of social unrest, racism, sex, drugs and dodgy haircuts. The discussion is therefore both explicit and full of spoilers. Also apologies for the intermittent background music from the airport lounge in which this episode was recorded.

VoK 178: The Fly [1986] (Review)

Weeks after the Horror Movie Roundtable (VOK 158), Dagos_Rivers (Glen) and Beric175 (Matthieu) recorded an expanded edition of the 1986 cult classic, ‘The Fly’ starring Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis and John Getz.

References are briefly made towards The Fly II, The Fly (1958) and other disgusting 80’s movies like Cocoon and Videodrome. However, the primary focus is Jeff Goldblum / Geena Davis vehicle.

Both Vassals discuss how much Jeff Goldblum looks like Michael Jackson, Stalking 101, and are (truly) classic movies ‘unremakable’? Glen contradicts himself about the difference between remakes and ‘readaptations’ as
he realises both Carrie movies were based on the Stephen King book.

The most infamous scenes of the picture are discussed, the professionalism of the midwife (cameo by Mr. Cronenberg), movies that are in development hell and the plot is discussed at length.

Join our (whatever the collective noun is for snowmen) of Vassals and special guest host Amin from A Podcast of Ice and Fire, to discuss Disney’s super-hit, the Oscar winning Frozen. We take a semi-serious look at the issues of feminism, LGBT rights and depictions of race in Disney. We also take a not very serious look at whether Hans is gay, whether A Song of Ice and Fire could have a happy fairytale ending, and what kind of protection one might need in dating Elsa.

Naturally this is full of spoilers for Frozen, but also Mulan, Pocahontas, Brave and assorted other Disney princess movies.

The Vassals dream of electric sheep in this audio commentary for Ridley Scott’s 1982 science-fiction classic Blade Runner (The Final Cut). Join Katie (Lady Griffin), Bina (Bina007), and Duncan (Valkyrist) as they debate whether or not Deckard is a replicant and (maybe) drive off into the mountains for a happy ending.

The movie should be synced from 7:00 to 2:05:00, and the commentary itself will begin exactly 1 minute into the movie, due to minor recording issues.

The Vassals soak up some culture with an audio commentary for the 1984 period drama Amadeus (Director’s Cut). Join Bina (Bina007) and Duncan (Valkyrist) as they dissect the tragic rivalry between Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The movie should be synced from 1:50 to 3:02:07, and the commentary itself will begin around 50 seconds into the movie. This was due to some slight audio wrinkles, which thankfully iron out after the first few minutes. Also, don’t forget to nominate this episode for the “Most Niche VoK” award 😉
