8 years!

Today marks 8 years since the very first VoK episode was published: a review of one of the Tuf Voyaging short stories (an earlier work by George R.R. Martin).

The podcast began as an idea suggested by Amin (host of A Podcast of Ice and Fire) in 2013 for listeners of APOIAF to create listener podcasts. A driving force for the podcast was Vikram (original curator ‘FortyTwo’) who setup the structure we still use today when publishing episodes.

Very quickly, additional curators and podcast contributors became involved and a staggering 106 podcasts were published by the first year anniversary.

Contributors / Hosts of the podcast have come and gone (and we really hope they return one day) and the pace of the podcasts have slowed down a bit since ‘Game of Thrones’ ended. However through our passion for literature, film, history, music and a song of ice and fire, we continue to produce over 50 episodes a year.

Thank you to everyone that has listened, continues to listen and especially for those that decided to join the discussion.

Some final stats: 657 episodes, over 100 hosts, 14 curators, 9152 YouTube Subscribers, Total YouTube video views: 2,237,671.

If you wish to listen to where it all began, below is a link to our first episode:

Vote for VOK in the Podcast Awards

Hi everyone,
It is the annual Podcast Awards, nominations begin on Friday, 15th April.

Podcast Awards

If you go to the above link, and you will be able to submit a form (from 15th April) of your favourite podcasts, in a number of categories like Gaming, Movies, Politics, Religion, etc.

So we would appreciate if you nominate Vassals of Kingsgrave for Best ‘TV and Film’ Podcast; A Podcast of Ice and Fire for People’s Choice Podcast, and Best ‘Entertainment’ Podcast.

Although, if you don’t want to vote for either podcast, it is still a good opportunity to nominate the podcasts you love in their respective category.

There is a major shakeup which might help both podcasts: they have brought in a rule that podcasts that have won awards, in 2015, will be ineligible, or podcast that have won 5 awards in the past will be ineligible (so Internet Box that VOK lost to last year, in Best General Podcast, has won three times), that may help APOIAF too, as a number of podcasts have won possibly 5 or more awards in the past 10 years (ESPN Fantasy Focus, Rob has a Podcast, Mugglecast, This American Life).

Thanks once again for everyone that takes the time to listen to the podcasts, through iTunes, or through YouTube.

It being award show season, we curators thought it would be fun to do our own award show this year. We invite you all to use the form below and nominate your picks for best movie,TV show,Anime,Video Game etc.

http://goo.gl/forms/c9zzMm2ATW

Entries will be tallied, and the popular choice wins..simple as that.

Please Support Archive.org

Hi Gang,

As you know we at VoK use archive.org to host and distribute our podcast. Its one of the main reasons we curators have been able to run VoK for free, and don’t have to ask for donations or look for sponsors.

Archive.org hosts other good podcasts like APOIAF and content from independent news sites like Democracy Now!. They also do the fun “Wayback Machine”, which crawls the web and saves sites, like do you miss the look and feel of Martin’s old site? , then check out this.

Archive.org is a non profit and is run thru donations from patrons. So if you can, please give generously to Archive.org

Thanks

Vikram aka Fortytwo

Last night, in a little café off Swanston St, in the Melbourne CBD, the second ever Vassals of Kingsgrave Australian meet-up was held. In attendance (pictured from left to right) was Duncan (aka Valkyrist), Tanja (aka Scilens, en route back to Germany), Marius, and Jessica (aka jesicka309).

Coffee and red wine was drunk, wild ASOIAF theories were exchanged, winter cake was eaten (pictured below, baked by Marius), and a fun time was had by all! 🙂

Happy New Year VOK! (Podcast Announcements)

VoK_cover_art_300HAPPY 2014 VASSALS! It was almost 7 months ago that the first VoK was released, and since then we’ve organised and recorded 51 episodes, comprising over 70 hours of original content. Mother have mercy, just imagine what we’ll have achieved in 7 more months. As always, a big thanks to Amin and the Podcast of Ice and Fire crew for their lovely support, and of course to you guys (listeners and hosts), who make it all worthwhile.

In case you wanted to get VoK a (late) Christmas present, then we would be super appreciative if you could leave us a positive review and rating on iTunes, and (if you haven’t already) follow us on Twitter and YouTube. It should only take 30 seconds (a minute at the most), but we would be eternally grateful! Seriously, it would really help us out in terms of iTunes visibility. Anyway, that’s enough grovelling 😉

Here is a list of all of the “Call to Arms” threads currently active on the forums. Feel free to get involved in any of them… or, if you’re feeling brave enough, even start your own!

Movies & TV:
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (review)
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (review)
Amadeus (fan commentary)
Sherlock (BBC series)

Books & Novellas:
The Lord of the Rings (full reread)
ASOIAF Crackpot Theories
Real Word vs. ASOIAF History
A Flight of Sorrows (Collector’s Edition)
The Gentlemen Bastards series (by Scott Lynch)
Discworld series (by Terry Pratchett)

Video Games:
Fallout series
Dragon Age series

The full VoK Topic List is located HERE, and is updated frequently.

Finally, while it may be 2014, as Quaithe says, “to go forward you must go back”. Accordingly, all of the character discussions from our epic FeastDance reread have been neatly edited and indexed into a convenient YouTube playlist. For example:

So you can check out the full playlist HERE, and peruse individual character chapters at your leisure. We’re also hoping it will drive a bit more traffic to the podcast.

Anyway, that should put you all up to date. Happy New Year and long live House Manwoody! 🙂
