VoK 849: Wolf Hall

Join vassals Michal (inkasrain), Bina (Bina007), Stephanie (gsgd), and Marie (Nymeria) as they pass time with good company and get deep in discussion of the jaw-dropping BBC series Wolf Hall. Based on the epic novels by Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall follows Henry VIII’s faithful minister Thomas Cromwell as he rises — and eventually falls — in the viper’s nest of the Tudor court. Be wary of 500-year-old spoilers, suppurating ulcers, and nepo-babies onscreen and off.

VOK 848 – Agatha Christie 64 – Postern Of Fate

In this minipod Bina007 discusses the final novel that Agatha wrote, a Tommy and Tuppence thriller, originally published in 1973. It is sad to see an 83 year old Agatha clearly struggling to keep hold of the plot after a very promising set-up. But despite the bagginess of the novel it’s still fun to spend time with Tuppence as she solves an historic crime involving espionage and proto-fascism.

Spoiler free to 20m45s.

VOK 847 – Agatha Christie 63 – Elephants Can Remember

In this minipod Bina007 discusses the final Ariadne Oliver novel, published in 1972. It was also the final Poirot novel that Christie wrote. Ariadne is asked by an odious woman to investigate the twin murder of her son’s girlfriend’s parents. Did the father kill the mother or did the mother kill the father? It is a moving novel not least because of Ariadne / Agatha’s discourse on ageing and loss of memory.

Spoiler free to 24m45s.

VOK 845 – Agatha Christie 62 – Nemesis

Pat and Bina007 put up a passionate defense of the 1971 Miss Marple murder mystery. The first half may be baggy as Miss Marple investigates a past murder by the son of the plutocrat Jason Rafiel. But the psychology and tragedy of the crime, as well as the audacity of the final set piece, elevate the novel.

Spoiler free to 58m. Thereafter spoilers for Nemesis, Death on the Nile and Body In The Library.
